The Toronto Maple Leafs extended one of their defensive prospects to a one-year contract.

For the second time in as many days, the Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed a player to a one-year deal. This time around it’s Andreas Borgman, who will be making $700,000 next season on a two-way contract.

The 23-year old is currently playing with the Toronto Marlies and is in his second season with the organization.

Leafs fans may remember Borgman being a frequent presence in the Leafs lineup during the first half of the 2017-18 season. During that time, he registered 3 goals, 8 assists, and 11 points in 48 games played. Additionally, he posted a 50.24 CF%, a 53.23 GF%, a 53.16 SCF%, a 53.77 HDCF%, and a 51.61 HDGF% at 5v5 during his rookie season. (Stats from Naturalstattrick.com).

Andreas Borgman Extended

Here are the details of the extension as per the Leafs official Twitter page:

By no means was he a game-breaking talent, but Borgman did show the promise of becoming an NHL regular in the future.  The Leafs are deep at the left-defense position, he was sent down to the Toronto Marlies where he has remained since.

His time spent with the Marlies has been plagued with injuries which have limited his playing time. Last season, he recorded 4 goals, 5 assists, and 9 points in 25 appearances, which would have been higher if he didn’t suffer an injury mere days into his tenure.

Additionally, Borgman barely got to play during the Marlies Calder Cup run (only seeing the ice in 2 games) because of a nagging lower-body injury he suffered during the second round against the Syracuse Crunch. This season, he has missed significant time at various points due to a concussion he sustained in mid-December and another one suffered in late-February.

When healthy, Borgman has established himself as one of the Marlies’ most critical defenseman on their roster. In 39 games played, he has 4 goals, 11 assists, and 15 points as per HockeyDB. This has him ranked 3rd, 2nd, and 2nd respectively amongst all Marlies defenseman, latter two having him behind only Calle Rosen.

Cleary, Borgman has shown signs that he can be an effective NHL player and was able to get an extended look with the Leafs during his rookie season because of it. Unfortunately for him, injuries have significantly gotten in the way of his development and ability to play, which has ultimately affected his numbers.

But when he is on the ice, Borgman has made an impact and has proven to be one of the Leafs more valuable defensive prospects. He has made progress in rounding out his all-around game and slowing working his way back onto the Leafs roster (perhaps as early as next season).

Borgman has played his way into the Leafs future plans and is a cheap-depth piece that helps round out the team’s overall roster. His contract extension today is proof of that.

This is another solid win for Kyle Dubas, as he gets another NHL quality player (joining Rosen, Garrett Sparks and Trevor Moore) at a very cheap salary cap hit.
