Toronto Maple Leafs Sign John Tavares

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed John Tavares.

It actually happened.  I have to write that again because it looks insane: Johnathan Tavares has signed with Toronto Maple Leafs.

Holy %$#@

After what seems like decades of speculation, billions of words written, and the longest deliberation in the history of deliberations, John Tavares has chosen to come home to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The main thing about being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, is that things like this don’t happen. Other than Mats Sundin, the Leafs haven’t really ever had a player like this. (At least prior to drafting Auston Matthews). The best players in the NHL usually play elsewhere.

Hard to Believe

Now the Leafs have Tavares, Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

It is insane.  I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but I did.  And now I’m glad.  This is one of the greatest days in franchise history.

The Leafs instantly vault to the top of the NHL.  They are now the favorites to win next year’s Stanley Cup.  The now have the best roster in the NHL, despite losing about a third of it over the course of the last couple of days.

It doesn’t matter.

Auston Matthews – John Tavares – Nazem Kadri is the sickest 1-2-3  punch the NHL has ever seen.  Good luck defending that, other teams!

The even crazier thing is that the Leafs can give each of these guys a pretty great winger with Nylander, Marner and Johnsson all ready to ride shot-gun for whoever Mike Babcock decides is the best match.

This is truly the greatest day of my hockey fan existence.  Other than the time the Leafs won the draft lottery, I can’t think of anything this exciting to ever happen to the Leafs.

When they go out and win a Cup it will be better, but until then………expectations are going to be sky-high.   In order to make good on the potential of this roster, the Leafs will need not just one, but multiple Stanley Cups.

John Tavares!!!!!!

I’m losing the ability to write coherent sentences.

Last year Tavares had 37 goals, and 87 points.  He will do even better when other teams have to decide who, between him and Matthews, they should put their best defenders on against.

The contract is massive, the expectations are bigger and the risks are enormous.  But who cares?

The Toronto Maple Leafs now have the best team in hockey.  By a significant margin.  I don’t ever want to hear the word ‘rebuild’ again.

It’s time to celebrate.
