This year’s trade deadline was well-done by the Maple Leafs on many fronts.
Although, some may argue that they failed to add on the blue line, which is factual. But, given the amount of talent that will be up for grabs in the upcoming free agency, maybe Lou is holding off for a star blue-liner?
The trades that the Leafs made did not hurt the team in any way. Instead, added a bit more veteran leadership.
Of course, the biggest acquisition for the Leafs was Tomas Plekanec from the Montreal Canadiens, an Original Six Rival. With nearly 1000 career games under his belt with the Habs, it was time for him to say goodbye to the team which had drafted him 71st overall in 2001.
The Czech native has six goals with 18 assists, combing for 24 points in 62 games this season. And being a good two-way centre has him staying fairly positive throughout his career within the +/- category.
Even though his first two games in blue and white have resulted in losses, he appears to have a new skip to his stride on the ice.
The trade also does not hurt the pocket within the front office as the Habs retained 50% of Plekanec’s salary. He also becomes a UFA at the end of this season, so he could just head back to Montreal if Toronto does not send an offer his way.
But, Plekanec’s veteran know-how and leadership might have him back in Leafs uniform for at least one more season following this year.
As for the blue-line? You can trust the system, there could be some big things coming in the offseason.
