Today the suggestion was made to trade William Nylander for Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber.

No, this is not a joke. No, this was not suggested by a Leafs fan. And no, I don’t want the Toronto Maple Leafs to trade William Nylander. Today, however, it came to my attention that someone actually thinks the Montreal Canadiens can land our young superstar to be.

Even more bizarre, they think trading Shea Weber for William Nylander is a deal worth considering for the Leafs. Now, before I start summing up a billion reasons why we should not even consider trading Nylander, for anyone, I’ll take the time to describe why I think it’s a bad idea.

Shea Weber

Shea Weber is a thirty-two-year-old defenseman, who, at best, has a couple of years left as a top pairing player. And we do not need another Defenseman on our roster who eventually needs the same time to start skating that takes me to make a beer run to the fridge.

Sure, Weber brings goals to the blue line, but Nylander has more scoring potential than Weber does and he’s just 21-years-old. Why on earth should the Leafs give that up? And the Leafs are all but shy on a defenseman with an offensive upside to their game. It’s not like they’re lacking for puck moving defenseman with Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner, Nikita Zaitsev, Travis Dermott and Timothy Liljegren on the roster.

Don’t forget, if Nylander would be traded, the Toronto Maple Leafs would have another hole to fill down the middle. Tyler Bozak will probably not be around much longer and Gauthier will become a fourth line center at best in his career.

William Nylander

Actually, instead of writing a book about why the Leafs shouldn’t trade William Nylander, I’ll make it easier. I’m going to give you all the reasons why they should trade William Nylander. Here it goes; there is absolutely NO reason to trade William Nylander. Anyone else who thinks they should trade, for say, a “franchise defenseman”, should see a doctor. Let us learn from the horrible Edmonton Oilers trade; Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson.

William Nylander has the potential to become one of the better players in the league for years to come.  The luxury to potentially have Matthews, Nylander, and Kadri as your centers is something many coaches, GM’s and fans will be jealous of.

William Nylander is a Toronto Maple Leaf and I don’t see any reason to change that fact, no sir.
