Maple Leafs: Rielly Makes Fake Olympic Team + Other News
The Toronto Maple Leafs are off until tomorrow, when they play the Flames.
That doesn’t mean that there isn’t some interesting Toronto Maple Leafs News to talk about.
Morgan Rielly
Morgan Rielly has had his best ever start to a season, and is on his way to a career best year. Rielly currently has 17 points in 25, and is among the Leafs best possession players. He has elevated his game in this, his fifth season.
His hot start to the season has not gone unnoticed.
TSN analyst Craig Button has listed Morgan Rielly on his fake-Olympic hockey team. As much as I love Morgan Rielly, I don’t know if this is very good analysis. First of all, has Craig not ever heard of Brent Burns or Shea Weber? Those guys become American when I wasn’t looking? And I’m pretty sure you’re going to play PK over Rielly no matter who shoots which way.
A fun fantasy, but I believe Rielly will have to look like a legit #1 for more than a couple months before he gets true consideration for a real international team.

Carl Grundstrum
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Carl Grundstrum has been injured, according to Sportsnet.
It appears that old Grundstrum – who has been playing in Sweden – has injured his knee and that he will miss the expected four to six week period that knee injuries tend to require. Grundstrum is a promising Leafs prospect who was climbing everyone’s pre-season top-prospect lists quite rapidly after a decent playoffs with the Marlies last year where he scored four points in six games.
Grundstrom is 19 and was picked in the second round, 57th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Toronto Marlies
By beating Utica yesterday, the Toronto Marlies won their seventh game in a row. They are now the top team in the AHL. They lead their division by seven points.
The Marlies this year are tearing it up on the back of goalies Garret Sparks (10-2 .947) and Calvin Pickard (5-2 .930). Sparks in particular has been insane, and he deserves a shot at the NHL at some point.
Sparks is 24 and has played parts of six seasons for the Toronto Marlies. The Leafs drafted him in the seventh round back in 2011. His only NHL experience is that he played 17 games with the Leafs two years ago. While he didn’t really play great, the Leafs were terrible that year and you can hardly blame a rookie goalie for not performing when the team is the worst in the NHL, as the Leafs were that season.

Anyways, that’s your update. Sparks is awesome, he should be in the NHL. The Marlies are crushing it and Old Grundy is hitting the DL. Oh, and Morgan Rielly made a fake team. Not bad for a Monday.
