The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to do much better this year.

After making the Playoffs by just one point over the Islanders and Lightning last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs were fairly happy.  It was nice and all to make the Playoffs again after six decades or whatever it felt like to you, but it was still humiliating to finish eight points behind the Canadiens.

This feels like the year in which the Leafs might be better.  The Canadiens have one of the worst GMs in the NHL, they are going to try a couple wingers out at centre and their defense now features Karl Alzner.

As fans of a team once run partly by Dave Poulin, we feel your pain Montreal.  But that doesn’t mean we’re going to become any less insufferable.  You trade P.K Subban and still beat us by eight points.

In fact, the last time the Leafs finished the season ahead of the Habs in the standings was in 2011-12 when the Atlantic Division was known as the North-East Division.  Toronto has only finished ahead of Montreal in two of 12 seasons since the NHL cancelled the 2004-05 season.

We Might Be Jerks!

The best part about being a Leafs fan, is the confidence that you’re cheering for the best and most important team in the history of the NHL and professional sports.   We are totally delusional.  It is the only way in which you could possibly still like this team, unless you’re under ten year old.

I don’t know about you, but I am happy to be delusional and more than alright with talking ____ to Habs Fans, even if there are people still alive in their fan base who have actually seen the Stanley Cup or no anything besides the shame of defeat.

Which brings me to Habs Fan vs Leafs Fan the weekly podcast hosted by Ari Shapiro and Kamal Rehman.  For some reason, we Leafs fans don’t blink an eye when we go toe-toe with an actual successful franchise (and one which beating us 10-2 in the last 12 years).

The concept of the show is great, both hosts are intelligent and entertaining and…… they had me on as a guest.  It’s essentially the greatest podcast in the history of the format.  I assume.

Seriously though, it is both entertaining and informative, and I would recommend it to you even if they didn’t have me on as a guest.

While I was on, we talked about Toronto Maple Leafs (obviously) Jake Gardiner (the best) Leadership (the worst) and expectations (make them crazy).  It was a great time…. for me at least.   Here is the link to the newest episode:

If you get the chance, razz on a Habs fan.  If you still have time after that,  check out the podcast.
