Left Overs
Basically, anything or nothing at all.
Let’s take a look at the roster (lines) listed above that’ll be for sure on the books for the 2018-19 season.
Disclaimer, these will most definitely not be the lines, but it’s just to give you an image of what things will look like.
The names in bold represent the players that aren’t signed for that season but will be.
Patrick Marleau – Matthews – Nylander
Hyman – Nazem Kadri – Brown
Matt Martin – (vacant) – Marner
(vacant) – (vacant) – (vacant)
Morgan Rielly – Ron Hainsey
Jake Gardiner – Nikita Zaitsev
(vacant) – (vacant)
Frederik Andersen
Curtis McElhinney
There are some holes above as you can see because of the almost certain departure of some of the veterans with expiring contracts.
But we can easily use some of the following players who will most likely be resigned or are already signed to fill them that are in the Leafs system.
- Josh Leivo LW
- Connor Carrick RD
- Carl Grundström LW
- Calle Rosén LD
- Andreas Borgman LD
- Timothy Liljegren RD
- Travis Dermott LD
- Frederik Gauthier C
- Kasperi Kapanen RW
- Kerby Rychel LW
- Jeremy Bracco RW
- Rinat Valiev LD
- Adam Brooks C
- Andreas Johnsson LW
- Nikita Soshnikov RW
- Andrew Nielsen LD
- Tobias Lindberg LW
- Dmytro Timashov LW
Do you get the point?
The holes will be patched and won’t take up a lot of cap space, I mean, look at the variety of positions.
Now, I realize that this is only looking forward a couple of years, but I think it’s safe to say that the Leafs can avoid cap hell.
They can also easily slip into it, but it’s avoidable.
