Zach Hyman signed a contract extension with the Leafs on July 5, 2017, for four years at $2.25 million per.

He produced 10 goals and 28 points in a full 82 games played last season.

I think this is a wonderful template for Brown’s next contract.

My prediction is not obscure or anything of that nature, but I simply believe that Brown will earn a little more than Hyman.

That’s all.

What I don’t want to see happen is Brown being signed for more than $3 million per season and in regards to length, five years would be too much.

If the Leafs were to go that route, up front it looks they’re going to stranglehold themselves in the near future.

Take a look at Nino Niederreiter’s statistics as I’d like to think he’s comparable in this situation.

After his entry level contract expired, he signed a three-year deal worth $8 million.

That’s pretty similar to Hyman’s.

Realistically, I see Brown’s next contract in the neighborhood of $2.5 million per season for four years.

That’s a total of $10 million paid out to him.

I feel like that’s fair compensation and affordable for the Leafs moving forward.

Right now, they can’t afford that, but when LTIR kicks in, they’ll be able to, not to mention that a lot of money will be coming off the books pretty soon.
