Toronto Maple Leafs: Laughably Bad Ideas
The Internet is abuzz with Ideas for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
But some of those ideas are terrible. The Toronto Maple Leafs don’t need Karl Alzner. They sure as heck don’t need Brent Seabrook. Good thing I’m here to set everyone straight!
I don’t know where bad ideas come from or why/how they get propagated. I have to imagine that they are fantasies brought on by people who have based their player analysis on reputation and not facts.
There are people, and no offense to them (they’re just wrong, they’re not bad guys) who think Karl Alzer is a good NHL player. There are even more who think the same thing about Brent Seabrook.
Now, once upon a time this might have been true, but time marches on and players decline. In the case of Alzie and the Seaman, time has marched faster than it usually does.
There are those who will tell you that the Toronto Maple Leafs management is interested in both players. Based on what we know about the Toronto Maple Leafs management (I.E that they are competent, maybe even really, really good) I have to say I doubt that very much.
But who knows?
Seabrook and Alnzer
Brett Seabrook is 32. He is in a free-fall of decline. Yes, he can rack up the points (mostly only on the power-play, however) but he is one of the worst defensive defensman that there are.
Brett Seabrook’s defense makes Nikia Zaitsev look like Scott Stevens in his prime. He also has the WORST contract in the NHL. No exceptions. No opinions – just the objectively worst contract in the NHL. David Clarkson would be preferable.
Considering the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted out of the Dion Phaneuf contract, I don’t know why anyone thinks they’d want to acquire a guy with a worse contract who is a worse player.
But there you have it. I rate the idea of acquiring Brent Seabrook 9.5 out of 10 on the John Kordic Bad Moves Scale.
As for Karl Alzner, I’ve written about it a bunch. No need to rehash how ridiculous of an idea signing him is. Why there are people OK with giving Alzner 5/6 million a year, but balk at giving Shattenkirk a slightly higher deal is something I won’t even try to understand.
I would rate acquiring him a 9.25/10 on the John Kordic Scale as it’s almost equally as stupid of an idea as getting Seabrook.

The Leafs should just re-sing Polak or Hunwick instead of going for these crazy indefensibly bad players.
While nothing is impossible, until they prove me wrong, I will not consider it even possible that a management group as vaunted and respected as Shanahan and co. would make such terrible moves, but those are the rumours.
