Should the Toronto Maple Leafs go after Chris Tanev?

Although the price may not be right for the Toronto Maple Leafs, not to mention the rest of the teams in the league, he’s an intriguing target.

Tanev’s a good defenseman who’s on an extremely favorable contract and people know that.

The Vancouver Canucks know that too, they’re not stupid, so naturally, the asking price will be high.

And yes, there’s an asking price because Canucks president Trevor Linden has made it clear that the team is starting a rebuild as reported by Rory Boylen of Sportsnet.

Obviously we’ve been forthright in saying we’ve been transitioning as a team to a younger group and that was becoming a bit of a sticking point with some people. So to get alignment with our fans and our media I used the rebuild word today, which everyonce can get their head around.

There you have it, Vancouver is rebuilding.

About time.

The Asking Price

More from Editor In Leaf

In another article written by Boylen, the conversation regarding Tanev was brought back up and put into circulation.

I guess I just missed it when the article went live the other day.

Anyways, according to a few sources, the price is high for Tanev’s services.

Aforementioned in an article of mine, Tanev’s modified no-trade clause begins at the start of the 2017-18 season, so now is the time for the Canucks to trade him.

When his MNTC kicks in, he’ll be able to list eight teams in which he won’t accept a trade to.

Elliotte’s Take

Here’s what Elliotte Friedman had to say regarding Tanev.

There’s been a lot of talk about Christ Tanev and the Vancouver Canucks. The one thing I’ve heard is other GMs who say they’ve reached out to Vancouver have been told this is no guarantee and if Chris Tanev is going anywere the price is going to be very high for him. He’s got three more years under contract. He’s a good player at a good price. I don’t think Vancouver is looking to do this unless it’s a great deal.

So, if the Leafs want to go for Tanev, they’ll have to go all in.

Maybe leveraging some of their high-end prospects and possibly that 17th overall pick in the upcoming draft.

He’s the kind of guy that would solve the problems on the backend immediately, but the price is high, very high.

That last link where I suggested a trade for him, ya, it’s way off.

I admit it.
