Anticipation is growing at the heart of Leafs nation. As the Toronto Maple Leafs begin their offseason tenure, questions have arisen as to which players may peak their interest. As speculation grows, Josh Manson is becoming a clear possibility.
It has been stated time and time again that the Maple Leafs are in need of a right handed defensemen. However, no one really knows who they will chase, or who they are willing to give up (if need be).
Why Josh Manson Could End up in Toronto
A name that has been making an appearance is Anaheim Ducks’ Josh Manson. In reference to my previous article, overviewing the possible outcomes of the Maple Leafs search for defensemen, I conducted a Twitter poll. One player that I didn’t list was Josh Manson, who was then clearly mentioned as a favorite next to Sami Vatanen.
Manson stands out as a strong defensemen who is very mobile on the ice. He is strong on his stick which allows him to move the puck efficiently. He is poised to be listed as an RFA after next season, currently sporting a low cap hit of $825,000. For this reason, Josh Manson will be a cheaper option within the NHL’s market of defensemen.
If acquired, his current contract situation would give the Leafs a chance to evaluate his play as a potential top-4 defensemen. Manson would likely fill a role to the right of Jake Gardiner, adding a fresh face with lots of potential to Toronto’s defensive core.
How Josh Manson Could End up in Toronto
At any rate, Manson will not arrive in Toronto for free. We can only assume that the Maple Leafs would be saying goodbye to an asset if they draw up an offer.
Be that as it may, James Van Riemsdyk could be an option when dealing with the Anaheim Ducks. The last thing that Anaheim needs is another defensemen, and JVR would be a skilled addition to their offensive core. Along with the cost of acquisition, a trade for Manson will most likely demand a forward asset in return.
Is Manson Worth an Effort?
Yes.
Despite the fact that he isn’t an offensive defensemen, there’s no doubt that Manson has skill. Some of his ability may remain untapped, as he is still a young player at age 25.

One of the Toronto Maple Leafs main goals this offseason is to acquire a defensemen, preferably a right-handed shot, who has potential to fill a top-4 role on the blue line. Whether this ends up being Josh Manson, Sami Vatanen, or anyone in between is left to be determined.
