Maple Leafs Fishing Trip Exemplifies Times We Live In

Did the Toronto Maple Leafs go on a fishing trip before Tuesday’s game?

Wy would anyone care?

I love the Leafs and I think it’s pretty cool that we get to cover them in the era of information.  But sometimes it goes too far.

What a player or team does leading up to the game is irrelevant.  They are professional athletes who obviously know what it takes to make it – namely, a level of dedication and a work ethic that is beyond what most people can comprehend, let alone pull off.

The NHL is 82 games long. It’s over 100 if you include pre-season and the playoffs.  So, if, on a trip to Florida the team chooses to blow off a little steam and take advantage of the rare NHL trip offering a temperate climate, why should anyone care?

If they lost 3-2 or if they won, I wouldn’t even know they went fishing.  The only reason anyone cares or even is talking about it is because they lost in a blow-out.  Which happens.  To every team.

There are no margins of error in the NHL. Every single player is incredible at what they do, and if you have an off-night, you get slaughtered.  That’s just how it works.  The thing is, you can have an off night even if you don’t go fishing before the game.  There doesn’t have to be a reason or excuse for everything.  Not everything that happens needs to be blamed on someone or something.

Toronto Maple Leafs!

If anything, this story illustrates what a ridiculous world we live in.

First of all, the stupidest thing is the players involved tweeting about it in the first place.  Who cares if you caught a fish or went fishing? Why would anyone care? People should just keep to themselves.

Sharing your minor accomplishments with the world is narcissistic and moronic. Just because everyone does it doesn’t mean it’s OK.  It’s annoying.

We have, for whatever reason, accepted that it’s normal to inform total strangers about what socks we’re wearing or what we might cook for dinner.  It’s so prevalent that no one even bothers to point out how obnoxious, stupid, pointless and idiotic the entire practice is.

I go to my daughter’s dance recital, and I am literally the only person not watching the thing through a five inch screen.  Guess what: no one wants to watch your kid’s performance but you, and you missed it.  Real life is in high-def and 3D.  Don’t tell the Yuppies.

Secondly, It’s a hockey game. It doesn’t affect your life in any way. It’s something you pay attention to so that you can forget the things that annoy, scare and worry you.  If players don’t live up to the insane standards you’ve placed on them, that’s your fault, not theirs.

Personally – and this is just my opinion –  I have scorn and contempt for people who care what hockey players (or any celebrity) do outside of their actual job.  If jagr gets a haircut, if Kadri gets a new cat, if Bozak goes fishing or Mike Babcock eats at subway, I don’t want to know.

Just tell me when the game starts or if there’s a trade.
