Brian Burke is no longer a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. The former president and general manager was serving as an advisor to the club after being relieved of his duties shortly before the season, but has now accepted a pro scouting position with the Anaheim Ducks.

Burke has spent time with Anaheim in the past when he served as their executive vice president and general manager from 2005-08. He was instrumental in putting together the team that captured the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 2007. Burke brought Teemu Selanne back in 2005 and signed Scott Niedermayer that very same year. He also acquired defenseman Chris Pronger who became a huge piece of the Ducks’ Cup winning puzzle.

In Toronto, however, things did not go as well. Burke failed to bring the Maple Leafs back to the playoffs during his tenure, and the team was a mediocre 129-135-42 under his watch.

From a Leaf perspective this move is probably fairly inconsequential because since being let go, his role as “advisor” was most likely in name only and Burke did not have any say in hockey related decisions. Making the move to pro scouting gives Burke a quicker path to returning as an NHL general manager, which is something he has expressed an interest in continuing to do.
