“Goals, Assists, and Penalties” is a collection of NHL and Toronto Maple Leafs news, and my opinions on the subjects.

“Goals” are deemed to be something positive, “Penalties” are deemed to be something negative, and “Assists” are generally something positive but often could be better about the Toronto Maple Leafs. Enjoy.

Penalty: Bozak over Marner/Matthews. How the H-E- Double hockey sticks does Tyler Bozak get listed on the NHL website for choice of All Start Captaincy selections over Mitch Marner or Auston Matthews.

Patrik Laine was selected so it is not a rookie thing. This is ridiculous. Everyone should go write in Marner and Matthews. I know I did. If you do it, use #writeinMarner and #writeinMatthews when you do it. I did it. Vote here https://www.nhl.com/all-star-ballot

One more thing, Jack Eichel was listed and he has barely played this year.

Goal: Andersen.  Stanley Cup winning caliber goaltender.  Great Job Lou.

Penalty: Anyone saying any player other than Matthews should be the next captain. Just stop.

Penalty: Nylander trade talk. Seriously? Unless you get an Aaron Ekblad back, there is just no way.

Assist: Enroth and Ramo. Good on Lou to put Enroth on waivers and not settle for half a season.  He is being proactive.  Expect Ramo to be signed with the Maple Leafs soon after a couple games with the Marlies.

More from Editor In Leaf

Penalty: Broken leg. Maple Leafs 2nd rounder in 2016, Yegor Korshkov,  broke his leg.

Penalty: Laine vs. Matthews.  More specifically, a penalty to those saying Laine is better than Matthews.  Don’t forget that early in their careers many people that Ovechkin was better than Crosby. …who would take that now? Not many.

Penalty: Me. Suggesting that Matthews is better than Laine.  He may not be…right now, but he will be.

Goal: Maple Leafs win the Jared Cowen arbitration. Big win. This gives Lou all the room he could ever want in terms of cap space and contract spots (now at 48/50).

Goal: Brian Burke…not in Toronto. Each time I see Burke on tv I thank my lucky stars that he is no longer on the Maple Leafs.  But seriously, why even bring a tie if you’re just going to hang it around your neck?

Penalty: Matt Martin is signed for 3 more years. With Kapanen, Leipsic, Leivo, Johnson, etc. in the pipeline, I don’t see room for Matt Martin on this team. Soon we will have 4 scoring lines and Matt Martin will not be on them

Assist: Fourth line center William Nylander. Speaking of four scoring lines, Nylander on the fourth line gives the Maple Leafs four lines that can score. I kind of like it. I say let him center the fourth and work and earn a chance between Marner and JVR.

Goal: It was reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs were playing mini-sticks in the hallway last week in their hotel while on the road.  So young. So hilarious. Love it. #needagoalie ?

Assist: My rankings of Maple Leafs top D-men through 24 games

Zaitsev

Gardiner

Reilly

Carrick

Polak

Marincin

Hunwick

Penalty: I won’t be able to count high enough to count those that are going to scorn me for putting Gardiner ahead of Reilly.

Goal: PK. Top five in the league.

Goal: 7+ times I heard a Go Leafs Go chant…in Vancouver.

Penalty: “Modern 500”. This drives me crazy. If the Maple Leafs record is 10-9-5…they are NOT above 500.  I understand that we now call it 500, but the Maple Leafs have 10 wins, 9 losses in regulation, and 5 losses in overtime or shootout.

That is 10 wins and 14 losses.  That is 4 games below 500. Under the current “modern 500” system, currently only 4 teams are below 500 and ZERO in the Eastern Conference…that is obviously ridiculous.

Goal Assist or/and Penalty: Bettman and CBA. If there is another lockout, Bettman better be sent home packing.

Goal: Matthews and Toews commercial.

Next: Enroth Struggled

Under Review: JVR. Do we trade him? Hang on to him? Extend him? Extend then trade? Sign and trade? I have no idea.  But I’ll bet he doesn’t get traded for anything less than a certain top 3 defender that is under 27 years old and under contract for at least two more years. My best guess is they extend him for 3-4 years at around $5M which makes him both tradeable AND an asset to the team. Choices are always good.
