Howard Bloom of Sports Business News is reporting the National Hockey League will be adding four new expansion teams by 2017 in Las Vegas, Quebec City, Seattle and a second Toronto team. There are issues to be worked out before another team can encroach on the mighty Maple Leafs’ territory, but that didn’t stop Jonathan Willis of the Edmonton Journal to look at some name options for a second club in Toronto. Which one do you support?
Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province threw more gasoline on the expansion rumours, calling a new Las Vegas team a “done deal”. It’s unclear when such a move would happen, but Gallagher seems pretty adamant that commissioner Gary Bettman has virtually made the decision already.
Anthony Petrielli of Maple Leafs Hot Stove is back with Part Two of his examination of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ penalty kill. He found that the Leafs’ strategy was much too conservative and didn’t do a good enough job of limiting and breaking up zone entries. There were also a ton of goals scored off faceoff losses. There are plenty of new players and two new assistant coaches coming in this season, so maybe that will be enough to change the Leafs’ fortunes.
Kyle Dubas spoke to Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star about the adjustments he’s made since being hired by the Leafs as an assistant general manager. He’s got some learning to do, but he definitely has a reputation as a quick study.
