For the month of August, Editor In Leaf will take a look at the Toronto Maple Leafs roster, previewing what could happen in the 2014-15 NHL season. Next up is the captain of the Toronto Marlies, Trevor Smith.
Years with Leafs: 1
Trevor Smith was not meant to spend as much time with the Toronto Maple Leafs as he did last season but as things went on, he ended up spending more time with the Leafs than he did with the team he was the captain of, the Toronto Marlies.
Smith ended up playing 28 games for the Leafs, scoring four goals and adding five assists for nine points. That might not seem like a lot, but Smith’s contributions were felt elsewhere. The faceoff circle was one of them as well as leadership in the bottom six. Unfortunately, the injury bug eventually hit Smith.
Smith ended being a valuable member of the Marlies during their run to the AHL’s Western Conference Finals, scoring three goals and adding eight assists for 11 points in 14 games.
The Leafs re-signed Smith in the off-season, but he will more than likely spend most of the season with the Marlies. With all the additional depth the Leafs brought in, it looks like he will actually be able to be the captain of the Marlies this year.
