Toronto Maple Leafs 2014-15 Player Outlook: Morgan Rielly

For the month of August, Editor in Leaf will take a look at the Toronto Maple Leafs roster, previewing what could happen in the 2014-15 NHL season. Next up is sophomore defenseman  Morgan Rielly.

Position: Defenseman

Age: 20

Years With Leafs: 1

Can he do it again?

In his rookie season, Rielly scored two goals while adding 25 assists for 27 points. Pretty respectable point total for a rookie as he was 19th in rookie points while being fifth in rookie assists.

This year, you would expect Rielly to take another step forward. However, one thing that must be watched are those expectations. Remember what happened to Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres? He won the Calder Trophy in 2009-10 and has deeply regressed since. One hopes that the same future is not in front of Rielly.

The Leafs also hope that won’t happen and they are preparing in a way that will minimize the chances. So far, it looks the like the Leafs defensive pairings will end up like this: Dion Phaneuf alongside Roman Polak on the first pairing, Stephane Robidas alongside Jake Gardiner on the second pairing and Rielly alongside Cody Franson on the third pairing.

Big Question: Will Morgan Rielly go through the dreaded “Sophomore Jinx”?

No. Not being in the spotlight should help Rielly this season and he should be able to develop his game even more.
