At the risk of sounding a bit Don Cherryesque, it’s pretty cool to hear a local player talk about how exciting it is to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. As a GTA kid, the Leafs were always my favourite team and I grew up cheering on the likes of Mats Sundin, Curtis Joseph and Gary Roberts. It strikes a chord with me when I hear Mississauga native Daniel Winnik speak similarly. (I might also add it’s even better when the contract signed is a cheap one.) Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun has more.
James Reimer was on The Jeff Blair Show on Sportsnet 590 The Fan yesterday morning. He said he’s ready to compete with Jonathan Bernier for a starting job and downplayed the trade request rumours, saying he never wanted out of Toronto, but thought he wouldn’t get a chance to come back after last season. Hopefully the adversity he faced will make him a better player and person in the long run.
Kyle Dubas appeared on the Marek vs. Wyshynski podcast yesterday and spoke about the old guard vs. the new guard, the process that led to him being interviewed for the assistant GM job, his relationship with Brendan Shanahan and analytics (of course), among other things. Maple Leafs Hot Stove posted the link.
What do Daniel Winnik, David Booth, Mike Santorelli and Matt Frattin have in common? Besides all being recent acquisitions of the Leafs, they all had great penalty differentials last season, which Cam Charron notes in this piece for The LeafsNation. This will bode well for a team that doesn’t do very well shorthanded.
