Cody Franson Decision Coming Today

By the end of the day, we will all find out what Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson will be making for the 2014-15 season.

Franson’s arbitration hearing is scheduled for today. An independent arbitator will look over the submissions from both Franson and the Leafs and make a decision. Franson’s camp made a submission of $4.2 million while the Leafs countered with only $2 million, exactly what he made last season. The arbitrator can award Franson anywhere between the two submissions, or possibly go even higher.

However, could the Leafs and Franson compromise before they even get to the arbitration hearing? There is still that possibility. HockeyBuzz’s Mike Augello says the Leafs next move is to offer$3 million, an offer he says that Franson would probably accept.

Whatever deal gets made, James Mirtle believes that no matter what happens, Franson still may not play for the Leafs next season, even though he believes the Leafs and Franson will compromise as well.

With the depth that Toronto now has on defense, with the big club and with the Toronto Marlies, Franson could be considered expendable. Petter Granberg looks ready for the NHL, while other prospects like Stuart Percy and Andrew MacWilliam could push for a spot as well. Not everyone can make it and moving Franson would open up at least one spot.

So, one chapter of the Cody Franson situation will be finished today. However, the story is far from over.
