The Toronto Maple Leafs signed 24-year-old Toronto Marlies right-winger Brandon Kozun to a one-year contract extension Friday. Kozun was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Andrew Crezcenci in January and scored 23 points in 40 regular-season and playoff games with the Marlies. He hasn’t made it to the NHL yet and the odds are stacked against him, but adding Kozun still turned out to be a smart move by general manager Dave Nonis.
The Leafs also released their 2014-15 pre-season schedule on Friday. They’ll once again take on the Philadelphia Flyers to open up the exhibition season in London, Ontario on Monday, September 22. They’ll also play games in Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo and Detroit. Maple Leafs Hot Stove has the full schedule.
Former Leafs GM Brian Burke was in Toronto to speak at a fundraiser along with Nonis, assistant GM Dave Poulin and captain Dion Phaneuf on Thursday. Burke was at his entertaining, sarcastic best when the topic of the Toronto media came up during a Q&A session. His comments were captured by Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun, and there are some real gems.
Everybody knows the Leafs are super rich and spend a lot of money but still really suck at hockey. SkinnyFish of Pension Plan Puppets shows the only team that performs worse given the amount of money they spend are the Edmonton Oilers. Ouch.
If all this talk about the Leafs’ failures are getting you down, just remember that England soccer fans probably have it worse, by a tad. If you’re a fan of both the Leafs and England, then, well, God help you. Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post uses the scientific method to break down the striking similarities between the two abysmal sports clubs.
