Toronto Maple Leafs Fan Poll: Who Should Be Captain If Dion Phaneuf Is Traded?

With all the rumors surrounding Dion Phaneuf lately, one thing has to be considered. If the Toronto Maple Leafs do end up trading their captain, just who would replace him?

Since Phaneuf was named captain, things haven’t exactly gone well for the Leafs, not to say that they weren’t going well before he first wore the “C”. There has been rumors this off-season that the Leafs would strip him of the “C”, but would that really work? It did when the San Jose Sharks stripped Patrick Marleau of his captaincy, but it’s not always going to work out like that.

So lets say the Leafs trade Dion Phaneuf? Who replaces him as captain?

Is it Joffrey Lupul, a current assistant captain? One would assume that his chances would be the highest. However, it’s not a sure thing that he will return to the Leafs next season either.

If the Leafs re-sign Dave Bolland, do you put the “C” on him? He obviously has leadership qualities, but him being injury-prone might put a damper on that notion.

Could it be Phil Kessel? He took blame for the Leafs missing the playoffs because he wasn’t producing near the end of the season even though he was the team’s leading scorer? That’s what a leader says right there, but do you really want to burden Kessel with that?

Could the Leafs go the way of the Columbus Blue Jackets and have no captain and just three assistant captains? It’s definitely a possibility.

If the Leafs trade Dion Phaneuf, this will be one of many questions that will need to be answered. If you were the Leafs, who would you put the “C” on?

A little early to be discussing this (light work day?), but I’ll play along. I wouldn’t assign a captain. Hopefully in another year or two, Morgan Reilly develops into the player that we all know he can be, and at that time, give him the C unless the Leafs draft someone who is an obvious leader.

  2. jimithy says:

Taking the ‘C’ from #3 would send a message. He failed and is not worthy. Let him play ‘D’. The best choice would be Clarkson, he seems to be a good yammerer. #3 is too introspective and gloomy.

You should have your posting privileges revoked. Bad comments on every article from you. Go cheer for the Sens, you’re not wanted in Leafs nation!

  3. flintonrice says:

I think that Phaneuf is a very good defenseman and definitely the best defenseman on the Leafs. Taht being said, he is an awful captain. He is terrible in interviews, comes across as a meat head and has now led the team to three collapses in three seasons.

They should not have a captain. There is nobody on the team that team that is deserving.

And Jimithy – FYI – your captain asked to be traded away from your team. I would have some humility and keep your comments to yourself.

Here’s James Mirtle (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/mirtle-van-riemsdyk-emerges-as-a-game-breaker-for-leafs/article16566322/) on James van Riemsdyk:

“He also has the makings of a potential captain down the road, if Phaneuf ever moves on, especially given he has quickly grown attached to Toronto and hopes to make it his long-term home.”

Just a name to think about. He’s only 24, so I wouldn’t give him the C just yet, I’d roll three alternates if Phaneuf is dealt. But he’s definitely someone I would consider a few seasons down the road, possibly within two years.

    • Andrew says:

I could see that. JVR Has really come into his own in Toronto. It’s also good to have a physical specimen as C – someone who can keep the troops in line. Pretty sure that was the idea when Phaneuf was named captain.

  5. A13276 says:

Rielly certainly has the makeup to be an excellent Captain – his attitude is just gold.
