Toronto Maple Leafs Fan Poll: Who Should Be Captain If Dion Phaneuf Is Traded?

With all the rumors surrounding Dion Phaneuf lately, one thing has to be considered. If the Toronto Maple Leafs do end up trading their captain, just who would replace him?

Since Phaneuf was named captain, things haven’t exactly gone well for the Leafs, not to say that they weren’t going well before he first wore the “C”. There has been rumors this off-season that the Leafs would strip him of the “C”, but would that really work? It did when the San Jose Sharks stripped Patrick Marleau of his captaincy, but it’s not always going to work out like that.

So lets say the Leafs trade Dion Phaneuf? Who replaces him as captain?

Is it Joffrey Lupul, a current assistant captain? One would assume that his chances would be the highest. However, it’s not a sure thing that he will return to the Leafs next season either.

If the Leafs re-sign Dave Bolland, do you put the “C” on him? He obviously has leadership qualities, but him being injury-prone might put a damper on that notion.

Could it be Phil Kessel? He took blame for the Leafs missing the playoffs because he wasn’t producing near the end of the season even though he was the team’s leading scorer? That’s what a leader says right there, but do you really want to burden Kessel with that?

Could the Leafs go the way of the Columbus Blue Jackets and have no captain and just three assistant captains? It’s definitely a possibility.

If the Leafs trade Dion Phaneuf, this will be one of many questions that will need to be answered. If you were the Leafs, who would you put the “C” on?
