Name: Nick Schmaltz
Weight: 172 lbs.
2013-14 Team: Green Bay Gamblers (USHL)
From: Verona, Wisconsin
The 18-year-old centerman of the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers completed the 2013-14 season with impressive numbers. Schmaltz was able to rack up 63 points in 55 games, 18 of which were goals.
His quick hands and offensive awareness is in part what allowed Schmaltz to put up such great numbers. He also possesses strong playmaking ability, which stems from his excellent vision on the ice, a skill in which many say is Schmaltz’s strongest.
“Nick is a player with a very high hockey IQ and I think his vision and creativity with the puck are his best attributes. In my mind he plays like [Buffalo Sabres forward] Thomas Vanek with the way he can slow down the game.” -Jordan Schmaltz
The kind words praising Nick’s set of skills came from his brother and 2012 first-round pick (No. 25) of the St. Louis Blues, Jordan Schmaltz, in an NHL.com piece. Jordan currently plays for the University of North Dakota. Nick, looking to play alongside his brother, has committed to join UND next fall.
Having the opportunity to play alongside his brother Jordan should prove helpful for Nick’s development as a player, and further him along on the road to becoming a future NHLer.
Schmaltz sits at number-19 on NHL Central Scouting’s prospect rankings, making it seem quite unlikely that he will be selected anywhere outside of the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
