2014 NHL Draft Profile: William Nylander

Postion: C/RW

Height: 5’11″

Weight: 181 lbs

2013-14 Team: MODO (SHL)

“He’s a good, mobile skater with outstanding skills, including smooth hands, vision, puck-handling and shot. He can also set up scoring chances for teammates and can score in many ways from outside or in traffic. He’s very competitive and effective on the power play.”

-Director of European Scouting, Goran Stubb

William Nylander is no joke when it comes to pure talent, second to Kasperi Kapanen in the NHL Central Scouting European skater rankings. Nylander proved he could be the kind of player a team could build around. He was selected as the best forward at the Under-18 World Championship, racking up 10 assists and 16 points to lead the tournament.

A few mock drafts could see Nylander go to Nashville with the 11th pick in the draft. I would consider that a steal as I think a guy with the talent of Nylander should be going way higher. With the core though in Calgary circling around guys like Mikael Backlund and Karri Ramo, the Flames would be a good fit for Nylander as it could improve the young European style the Flames are building, and having Backlund around with Nylander could boast an impressive front line. As far as the Leafs are concerned, I would like to see him be there but really think a defenceman is their best option at the draft as they need to improve the back end.

“The Leafs should take a defenseman to improve the back end” – you fail!! They’re SWIMMING in good, young defense prospects already – how could you not know that!
