Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Rumors: Another First Overall Scenario

Well, I knew this wouldn’t go away and it hasn’t. There has been more talk of the Toronto Maple Leafs possibly going after the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, which currently belongs to the Florida Panthers. This time, it’s not even someone in the Toronto hockey scene suggesting it.

David Staples of the Edmonton Journal posted the following series of tweets yesterday about what the teams at the top of the draft will do.

I wonder why someone who works in Edmonton would suggest the Leafs being interested in the first overall pick. Yeah, sure, everyone is, but not everyone can afford to trade for it. The Leafs look to be one of those teams.

If the Panthers want to take a winger in the draft, it would be smart to trade down into the 4-8 spots as that’s where the best wingers in the draft are slated to start getting drafted. Of course, it’s also mentioned that they need a defenseman. They could just draft Aaron Ekblad first overall, but what about the wing position? That is why a trade like this works for the Panthers.

Now, whether the Leafs would give up Dion Phaneuf or Jake Gardiner is the question. Gardiner would be the better option for the Panthers long-term, but it’s obvious they want to win now. That’s why Phaneuf is the better option right now. The Panthers’ defense has it’s veterans but it is full of younger players. Phaneuf could bring more experience to them.

Staples mentions that the Leafs would be going after either Sam Bennett or Sam Reinhart. While either of those two centers would be a good pick, I still believer that if the Leafs were to acquire the first overall pick, they would be going after the defenseman Ekblad.

These talks will probably continue right up until the Panthers are about to make that first pick. So that gives us another month to hear about this. This should be fun.

Trade Phaneuf or Gardiner plus the 8th pick for the #1 pick? Is the #1 pick a franchise player – no. He’s marginally better than the other picks available, apparently and the Leaf are swimming in young Dmen. Why give up two significant assets to gain one significant asset? This makes no sense. Do you people actually think these things through?

If the Leafs were to do this suggested trade, why would they change Phaneuf for Eckblad and loose a draft pick? Phaneuf is a proven if not top pairing certainly 2nd pairing Dman, and you give him up with a first pic for a prospect that isn’t named Orr? Does not make sense to me.

  • D.WAdair

Glad you clowns are not running the show, why would you trade Phaneuf and Gargner and a 8th pick for a no 1 pick. Ecklad may in time be a great player but you don’t make a trade like that unless your lost half your marbles.

  • Jack Kirchhoff

If the Leafs were to trade up, I’d rather see them drafting an elite forward. The team’s most significant weakness, one of many, I know, is in skill among the forwards. Let’s get one of those guys who score goals.

    • Jamieson King

Did you watch any games last year? Leafs have kessel, JVR, lupul, kadri and so on. What they really need are some big reliable two way defensemen and they don’t come along too often so they need to pick them up when they can.

      • Andrew

None of those guys are dominant C men. I agree with you that they have lots of skilled forwards, but they do need a dominant C and they actually have a lot of promising prospects on the point including, Finn, Nilsson (Swedish Elite Rookie of the Year), Granberg, and Percy. They have no dominant no.1 C in the system and Reinhart/Bennet could change the face of this franchise for a long time.

  • Andrew

I would try and send Phaneuf and Kadri for #1 overall (and a #3 or 4 Dman in exchange for some cash) and keep the number 8 pick. That would allow leafs to take Reinhart/Bennett at 1 and Vertanen/Perlini at 8. To be a real threat in this league, you need a dominant #1 C and that’s what the Leafs get in one of those two kids. And keeping the no. 8 spot helps you shore up ⅔ of your first line for 15 years. To replace Phaneuf, Leafs could then give an offer sheet to PK Subban and if they don’t get him they screw MTL for money at least and they could sign Boyle this off season on a 1 yr deal until they can find a more suitable replacement.

How does Phaneuf = Gardiner? Wouldn’t that be great? I don’t see giving up Phaneuf in that deal.I have little doubt they would be going for a center. I think 1st option will be to go hard for Stastny. If you can get him then sign him a good wing prospect in the draft you’ve created a decent line 2 for the next few yrs. Also frees up a trade of say Kadri for a D-man. Next option is 1st + Gardiner for pick to get Bennett. Next look…O’Reilly. next. ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; cccccccc

      Terrible logic!

      • Bill Kniess

What exactly….? or don’t you know!! You don’t like 1st + Gardiner to get Bennett…neither do I. But sometimes you need something. With Reilly on the back-end with the potential of a Finn/Granberg/Percy/Nilsson I would look to shore up 2 missing areas. 1 is a #1 center. Don’t get me wrong? I think Bozak is a very good player. But against a Toews or Getzlaf he would not carry a no.1 line. And how often do you get a guy like that as a free-agent? No..Kadri isn’t a #1 either. So get Bennett if you can’t get Stastny ..use Kadri in a deal to get that winger/d-man and then take the t.v. money next yr. to get that extra piece.

I heard the Panthers were trading for Kessler & Hamuis for their first over all pick as part of the Luongo trade.
