Toronto Maple Leafs News & Notes: May 22, 2014

Matt Finn and the Guelph Storm have already qualified for the Memorial Cup final after opening up the tournament with wins over Edmonton and Val d’Or. Michael Traikos of the National Post wrote about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2012 second-round pick’s superb season, as well as short profiles on a handful of other promising Leafs defense prospects.

For more prospect talk, Kevin McGran spoke to Leafs director of player development Jim Hughes about some of the other prospects making noise in junior and abroad.

The Leafs’ bottom-six forwards had mostly a horrendous year offensively. That group, needless to say, could use a few upgrades. Anthony Petrielli of Maple Leafs Hot Stove takes a look.

Would another team really be willing to take on a huge contract like Dion Phaneuf’s in a trade? A lot of Leafs fans hope so. Josh Lile of Defending Big D explores that possibility in the case of the Dallas Stars.

Cam Charron has a great post up at The LeafsNation addressing some misconceptions Steve Simmons and others have about Corsi and shot attempt data. Basically, no one’s saying Corsi is the definitive tool to determine a player’s value, but it can point us in the right direction.
