The Toronto Maple Leafs are in need of assistant coaches and it seems that the Leafs are possibly closing in on one. There has been plenty of speculation that the Leafs are bringing in former Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates as one of Randy Carlyle‘s new assistants.
Is it a good idea though? Based on how the Capitals have done recently, you could understand why there might be some apprehension. After all, he was just recently fired.
However, might he work as an assistant after not being so successful as a head coach. Washington did have the NHL’s second best power play this season, so if he were to come to Toronto, he could make an already good power play even better. The Capitals penalty kill was also better than the Leafs PK so there is a chance that would improve as well.
The biggest thing that Oates would bring to Toronto has nothing to do with the way he coaches. It actually has more to do with the current Leafs head coach.
With the thin ice that Carlyle has been on lately, and don’t think that the extension makes it any thicker, it would be wise to have an assistant that has NHL head coaching experience behind Carlyle. If the Leafs get off to a horrible start next season, Carlyle could be gone mid-season. If the Leafs have another collapse similar to this season, you can be sure he’ll be fired after the season.
Oates probably wants to a chance to be a head coach again and there are still some vacancies around the NHL. He’ll look to get one of those jobs for sure. However, if they all get taken by others, the Leafs will surely be waiting in the wings.
