Toronto Maple Leafs News & Notes: May 16, 2014

What’s with the Toronto Maple Leafs and their obsession with vague terms like “mental toughness” and “compete”? Why not acquire players with important things like “skill” and “talent” and “puck-possession ability”? Michael Traikos of the National Post has some more comments from president Brendan Shanahan. I really haven’t decided if I like him or not yet.

James Onusko of Bleacher Report lists some free agents the Leafs might be able to sign for cheap. I agree with most of them, but is Devin Setoguchi good enough defensively to play in the bottom six at this stage of his career?

Hey guys, did you know Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper is a Leafs fan??? It’s true, he even wrote a book about them! Well, as Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star writes, Harper’s apparently jumped on the Montreal Canadiens’ bandwagon and is taking shots at the Leafs on Twitter (or, more accurately, whoever runs his Twitter account is taking shots at the Leafs). Boy, is he ever lucky the main competition for his job is this guy!

(Thus concludes today’s Canadian Politics News & Notes.)

Cam Charron of The LeafsNation has a very good piece on how just looking at Corsi and Fenwick isn’t going to help you as a hockey club (but is a useful starting point) and how it takes some guts to be a successful general manager in the NHL.

Geordie Carragher of Too Many Men On The Site put together a mammoth Memorial Cup preview. Read up on everything you need to know about all four teams participating in this year’s tournament, which starts tonight at 7 p.m. EST.
