NHL Trade Rumors: More Dion Phaneuf Rumblings

They’re the rumors that just won’t go away. It seems that everyone wants to keep talking about the possibility of Dion Phaneuf being traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

However, both Phaneuf’s agent Don Meehan and Leafs General Manager Dave Nonis have poured water on the flames with these quotes, courtesy of the Toronto Sun.

Meehan – “Dion and I treat this information as simply rumours… As such, we don’t really feel obligated to comment further in this regard.”

Nonis – “Nothing going on at this time.”

That has not done anything to the talk that is being thrown around by the media. Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star even jumped in saying that one NHL GM said that the Leafs could trade Phaneuf and not have to retain any of his new $7-million cap hit. She mentions the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers as teams that could take on his contract without asking the Leafs to keep some of it.

Elliote Friedman of CBC thinks that the Colorado Avalanche as well as the Flames and Edmonton Oilers could all be options.

We won’t know if all of this will lead to a trade or not but one thing is for sure: The fact that there is big rumors surrounding the captain of the Maple Leafs, shows that the Leafs are trying to change their culture.

Sure we (Edmonton) could use him, but the fact is $7M for a second pairing defenceman is too much money. Good player, bad contract.

I think he’s a first pairing player who is unequally yoked in Toronto. But yeah, still a bad contract.
