The Toronto Marlies resumed their Calder Cup run this week with a semi-final series against the Chicago Wolves. The Marlies swept the Milwaukee Admirals 3-0 in their first postseason series. The Marlies and Wolves faced off twice during the season, both teams winning one game each.
The Marlies got off to a fast start in Game 1 of the series, team captain Trevor Smith and Peter Holland both found the net to put Toronto up 2-0 after the first period. Josh Leivo showed his tenacity after the break with a good effort to set Greg McKegg up for a goal. Chicago briefly got themselves back into the game at that point, scoring a pair of goals to make it 3-2 before the final intermission. The Marlies redoubled in the last 20 minutes, Carter Ashton scored his first of the playoffs when he drove Jake Allen’s net and Sam Carrick capped things off with an empty-netter for his fourth goal in as many postseason games.
Like in the previous night’s game, Holland and Smith gave the Marlies a quick lead with a pair of first-period goals in Game 2. Josh Leivo also continued his production from the last game, scoring to make it 3-0 before 15 minutes had been played. The Wolves would eventually make it 3-2 but couldn’t complete the comeback, the game finishing 4-2 after Jerry D’Amigo scored on an empty net.
Game 3 will be played at Ricoh Coliseum on Wednesday night. RogersTV begins its broadcast at 7 p.m.
