As Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos has tweeted, it appears that Dion Phaneuf might be on his way out of Toronto. The captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Phaneuf has been the target of Leafs Nation because of his perceived lack of defensive play. If Phaneuf is dealt, it will certainly make his detractors happy.
To recap what Kypreos said, here are the tweets he sent out.
Now to the question in the headline. Where could Phaneuf end up? Well, according to Kypreos, we can narrow it down to the 14 Western Conference teams. Makes sense, as the Leafs would want Phaneuf coming back to bite them as few times as possible.
So which Western Conference teams would be interested in Phaneuf? Sportsnet’s Mike Johnston lists six teams as possibilities. They are the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Winnipeg Jets, San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames. Kypreos also mentions the Florida Panthers and St. Louis Blues.
As Kypreos mentions, the Blues and Sharks would need to send some money back to bring Phaneuf in. Johnston even mentions Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Brent Burns as possible targets. Kypreos also tweeted out a really intriguing option out of St. Louis.
Everyone of the suggestions that Johnston and Kypreos mention look like potential blockbuster trades. With all this discussion, something has to happen, right?
