Toronto Maple Leafs News & Notes: April 16, 2014

The NHL held its annual draft lottery last night, and we learned the Toronto Maple Leafs will be picking eighth overall. Justin Fisher of The LeafsNation has a short blurb on some of the players who are projected to fall in that range. Who do you like?

T.J. Brennan has won the 2014 Eddie Shore Award for best defenseman in the AHL. Brennan had a crazy prolific offensive season, the best by an AHL defenseman since 2005-06. AHL.com has the announcement and a highlight video.

Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star wrote a piece defending Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle, saying he shouldn’t be fired. Unsurprisingly, she presented shoddy reasoning for her opinion. Birky of Pension Plan Puppets dissects DiManno’s column and shows why the Leafs’ systems under Carlyle are a big part of the problem.

The 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin tonight, and one of the most interesting storylines this year (as it is most years) is who will emerge out of an incredibly loaded Western Conference. As Cam Charron writes for Grantland, there’s a good chance the two teams that survive the Sharks-Kings and Blues-Blackhawks series’ will end up duking it out in the Conference Final.

Jack Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets might be the most overrated player in the NHL. Tyler Dellow explains why.
