Well, I didn’t think I would have to ask this question again.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs losing streak now standing at six games, the bottom has fallen out from under them. The playoffs looked like a certainty a week ago. Now, it is far from a sure thing.
The Maple Leafs have 80 points so far in the regular season. The Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals also have that point total. Currently, the Blue Jackets and Red Wings hold down the wild card spots in the Eastern Conference because they have the most games remaining (10). The Capitals are next in line in ninth with nine games remaining. The Leafs are 10th because they only have eight games remaining.
The mission is quite simple: Win as many games as possible. However, that won’t be easy. Here are the teams the Leafs play in their final eight games: the Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, Winnipeg Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators.
There are at least three very winnable games in Calgary, Florida and Ottawa. Those are games the Leafs have to win to ensure they have the points needed. Its the games against the Flyers, Red Wings, Bruins, Jets and Lightning that will be problems for the Leafs. They are all teams that are either in the playoffs and are trying to stay there or teams that are trying desperately to get there.
The 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs start in a couple of weeks. Will the Leafs be participating?
