Game 2: @ Detroit Red Wings

Next up the Leafs faced their Winter Classic rivals for the second last game of the season series. Detroit opened scoring as Gustav Nyquist jetted past Tim Gleason for a breakaway goal 12:40 into the game. After a scoreless second period Nyquist doubled the Red Wing lead with another goal off the rush, this time taking advantage of Joffrey Lupul’s turnover to go down ice. Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner combined for a sensational goal to make it 2-1, Rielly sent a long pass from the Leafs’ end down into Detroit’s where it ricocheted out from the corner onto the stick of pinching Jake Gardiner, who promptly deked Jimmy Howard for his ninth goal of the season. The Leafs were unable to hold onto momentum after the goal, Daniel Alfredsson scored the eventual winner with under three minutes to go. James van Riemsdyk tipped in his 27th late in the game but it wouldn’t be enough, 3-2 Detroit.

Controversy arose after the game due to Randy Carlyle’s press conference remarks, the head coach said that he though James Reimer had played “okay. Just okay,” in the game. Reimer seemed put off by the comments, saying he thought he’d played a good game.
