California is normally a nice place to visit. But if you’re an NHL player, a trip there usually ends in crushing depression.
That’s because the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings (the next three teams on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ schedule) just so happen to be three of the best teams in the league. The Ducks have the second-most points in the league, the Sharks are tied for fourth and the Kings are eighth.
The Leafs begin a five-game road trip tonight that will test their mettle and be a good barometer to see how they stack up against some of the league’s best. The Leafs are coming off back-to-back overtime wins against the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, but both games went into extra time because the Leafs blew third-period leads.
The Leafs need to go .500 in their remaining 16 games. If they can leave California with that kind of record, they should be jumping for joy.

Got any predictions for tonight’s game? I would offer my own, but I have no clue what’s going to happen. This Leafs team is so inconsistent; who knows which version of the team will show up? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
