Toronto Maple Leafs News & Notes: March 4, 2014

EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING.

Well, not really, but for a random Tuesday, there’s a lot of trade news floating around the NHL Twitterverse. The Minnesota Wild have already confirmed they acquired goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov from the Edmonton Oilers for a 2014 fourth-round draft pick. It’s a minor deal, as Bryzgalov isn’t really good enough to be a starter anymore, but it’s a start.

In a bigger deal, the Washington Capitals traded a fourth-rounder of their own to the Anaheim Ducks for Dustin Penner. Then the Ducks flipped that pick to acquire defenseman Stephane Robidas of the Dallas Stars.

Viktor Fasth, the Ducks’ backup netminder, was also dealt to the Edmonton Oilers for a fifth-rounder in 2014 and a third-rounder in 2015. The Oilers have now totally overhauled their goalie situation with Ben Scrivens and Fasth replacing Devan Dubnyk and Bryzgalov.

Earlier in the day, the Montreal Canadiens traded a 2015 fifth-rounder for Florida Panthers’ defenseman Mike Weaver. Weaver is a pretty solid d-man who can provide some depth for a weak Canadiens’ blue-line, and a fifth-rounder is basically inconsequential.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are not expected to be very active in trades over the next 24 hours. The only move they’ve made today was waiving centre Trevor Smith. Smith should clear waivers and be reassigned to the Toronto Marlies.

Dave Nonis and Randy Carlyle must be confident centre Dave Bolland will be ready to go when the Leafs visit the New York Rangers tomorrow night. Without Bolland, the Leafs only have 10 healthy forwards on the roster.

In other news:

I won’t waste your time writing about why trading Nazem Kadri and a first for Ryan Kesler is a horrible idea (let alone throwing Jake Gardiner in there as well) because Chemmy of Pension Plan Puppets has already done that so succinctly.

ARE WE HAVING FUN YET???
