The Toronto Maple Leafs have not looked so good coming out of the Olympic break. Entering last night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, the Leafs had a chance to tie the Habs for the third spot in the Atlantic Division. With the overtime loss, the Leafs are now three points behind them. However, now the Habs are in second spot and the Tampa Bay Lightning are in third spot with 73 points, one above the Leafs.
So with two overtime losses in the last two games, something obviously needs to change. The Leafs were unable to hold a one-goal lead twice against the New York Islanders on Thursday and once against the Canadiens.
Now, the probable return of Dave Bolland on Monday should help the Leafs in the defensive department. Is that all they need? I would suppose not. The Leafs clearly need another defenseman and plenty of speculation says the Leafs are looking for a top-four defenseman.
Now those type of defensemen are pretty hard to acquire. You have to give up a lot to get them if you are not developing them yourself. That means any trade for one would probably end up being a blockbuster.
In Toronto’s case, a blockbuster in this season is defined by Nazem Kadri and Jake Gardiner being sent out in the same trade. If you were the Leafs general manager, would you trade them both in the same deal? Who would you want in return?
