The Buffalo Sabres are in a fire sale. Ryan Miller and Steve Ott are already gone. Christian Ehrhoff, Matt Moulson and newly-acquired Chris Stewart could all be moved before the deadline. There’s even speculation that defenseman Tyler Myers could be had for the right price. Could the Toronto Maple Leafs be willing to pay that price?
Myers is a 6’8″ defenseman that any team would love to get their hands on. However, with the Sabres looking to rebuild, Myers could be moved. Obviously, the Leafs would be interested in acquiring him.
The Sabres are going to want a lot in return for Myers, if they trade him at all. Draft picks will have to be involved, but I’m pretty sure the Leafs wouldn’t want to give up their first-rounder. So who would the Leafs have to give up? Well, it all starts with a player who has heard his name in trade rumors already this season. That player is Nazem Kadri.
Would it hurt to send a player like Kadri to a division rival in Buffalo? Yeah, it would, but would the Sabres really want to send Myers to the Leafs if they weren’t getting something good in return? Kadri would fit right into the rebuilding Sabres plans.
If the Leafs were to trade for Myers, Kadri would have to be included as well as a prospect and possibly a draft pick. Myers has had a few off-years but should bounce back in the future. With a contract that doesn’t end until 2019, there’s lots of time.
