With Canada’s 2-1 quarter-final victory over Latvia, they have now advanced to the semi-finals on Friday where they’ll play none other than Team USA.
Team USA defeated the Czech Republic 5-2 in their quarter- final game to advance to the semis. The US continue to be an offensive machine in this tournament, putting up a total of 19 goals over the 4 games that they’ve played. Led by the likes of Phil Kessel, who potted another goal against the Czechs, the States are going to be a tough offensive team for Canada to try to contain.
Canada, with the exception of a 6-0 blowout win in the preliminary round against Austria, has had a lot more difficulty with their offense than Team USA has. Canada hasn’t been able to produce the offense that a team of their skill-level should be, putting up just 12 goals in their 4 games thus far.
The red and white so far have seen most of their offense come from the blue line, with Shea Weber and Drew Doughty themselves scoring over half of Canada’s goals. If they have any hope of defeating USA in the semi-finals, they need to find a way to get everyone contributing, especially Sidney Crosby, who’s point total isn’t near where it should be for a player of his talent.
Canada vs. USA games are always exciting, no matter what the situation. Add in the revenge that USA will be seeking after their overtime loss to Canada in the finals in Vancouver, and this game has the potential to be as exciting as hockey can get.
