Detroit Red Wings

By John Evans

The Red Wings have had an up-and-down sort of week. Going back to their 5-1 victory against the Dallas Stars, they wrapped up a West Coast road trip by visiting the Sharks (loss) Kings (win!) and Ducks (loss). This isn’t to be unexpected and the only loss they looked really bad in was against the Sharks. However, the victory against the Kings was similar to the Dallas game in that the Wings allowed over 40 shots on goal, a trend that’s starting to get a little disturbing.

At the end of Tuesday night’s action, the Wings found themselves in a precarious position: outside the playoff window. Yes, if the playoffs started Wednesday, Detroit would be on the outside looking in with 50 points. Of course, they do have a game in hand on a team tied with them (Ottawa) and two games in hand on the two teams ahead of them (Leafs, Rangers). Still, with all their injuries that doesn’t seem to be getting better anytime soon, Wings fans have to be worried.

This week on Octopus Thrower we had a look at how sophomore defenseman Brian Lashoff is having a quiet but solid season.

And if you haven’t seen it yet, you really have to see Tomas Tatar’s game-winning goal a day after his father passed away. Touching stuff.

This week the Wings travel to Madison Square Garden before a homestand against the Kings, Blues and Blackhawks. It’s sink or swim time in the Motor City.
