Well, as much as I don’t think rumors from Eklund ever have a chance of happening, occasionally, he talks about one that I just have to comment on. Of course, they must be about the Toronto Maple Leafs and not absolutely absurd. While this one is way out there, I have to talk about it.
Now, Eklund brings up that Ryan O’Reilly of the Colorado Ava can not be traded until the end of February because of the kerfuffle with his contract situation last season. He also says that they would think of trading him because the wouldn’t want to pay him more than Matt Duchene. Also, if they did trade him, they would be interested in a top defenseman as part of a return.
Eklund then says that the Leafs would be among the teams interested. Who would be going Colorado’s way? None other than young Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner. He says a rumor he keeps on hearing is Gardiner and a prospect to Colorado for O’ Reilly.
He finishes off talking about this rumor with this,
I have always felt the Leafs were nuts for thinking of moving Gardiner, but O’Reilly may be worth it.
I hate to agree with Eklund but O’ Reilly would a player that would make losing Gardiner not sting so much. Now, given it might depend on who the prospect would be, but acquiring O’ Reilly would be great for the Leafs.
This deal has a slim to none chance of happening, but then again, it’s these types of rumors that are more fun to talk about. Let’s face it, no one wants to talk about Brad Mashinter-for-Kyle Beach rumors, do we?
Maybe the acquisition of O’ Reilly would cause too much trouble anyways. Having Ryan O’ Reilly and Morgan Rielly on the same team, who would want that?
