Toronto Maple Leafs News & Notes: January 8, 2014

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost to the New York Islanders 5-3 last night. Here are the highlights if you missed the game:

Please burn after watching.

It was another bad game for the Leafs, and if you feel like poring more over the gory details, you can check out recaps from us, Pension Plan Puppets, The Leafs Nation and Maple Leafs Hot Stove.

James Mirtle and Jonas Siegel released another Leaf Report podcast yesterday. Among the topics discussed was what the Leafs should do with their goaltending tandem. It sure looks like now, after two pretty terrible games by Jonathan Bernier, James Reimer will finally get his opportunity. Let’s hope anyway.

Mirtle also came out with his All-Snub Canadian Olympic team. Canadians often joke that a Canadian “B” team would challenge for gold, and looking at Mirtle’s roster, I can’t say I disagree. He even has Dion Phaneuf, Bernier and Reimer all making the team.

Speaking of snubs, none have been talked about more over the last two days than Tampa Bay Lightning right-winger Martin St. Louis. Stephen Whyno of The Canadian Press has reaction from Lightning players, coaches and general manager (of both the Lightning and Team Canada) Steve Yzerman on St. Louis’ exclusion. At least he can take solace in being a part of Mirtle’s awesome B team.

Lastly, Dave Mallett wrote a great piece on what it’s like to be an Edmonton Oilers fan during these tumultuous times for the franchise. As Leafs fans, I think we can all relate.
