Welcome to a new Weekly Feature here at Editor in Leaf. The Toronto Maple Leafs Fantasy Outlook. I know there are a lot of fantasy players out there, myself being one of them, and there are more than a few of you have a couple Leafs on your team. This feature will serve as a preview of the following seven days from a fantasy perspective, including player’s past performances against the Leafs’ opposition that week, and players you might be available for you to pick up based on those opponents. All owned percentages are from ESPN Fantasy Hockey.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are pretty good team when it comes to fantasy play. Players like Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Dion Phaneuf and Jonathan Bernier are almost always owned by 100 per cent of a fantasy leagues.
There are also players that might be good pickups based on the opposition. Other players like Tyler Bozak might be good pickups based on who they play with.
Let’s get this started with the most obvious player.
Phil Kessel, RW Own%: 100
Kessel has three goals and two assists in the past five games and is on a tear since Tyler Bozak returned. Kessel has two-goal games against both the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes, the Leafs opponents tomorrow and Thursday respectively. He has 1 goal against the New Jersey Devils, their opponent this coming Sunday.
You’ll start him every game anyway, but feel especially confident playing Kessel this week.
James van Riemsdyk, LW Own%: 100
JVR has one goal and two assists in the past five games. A force in front of the net, he could always be a tip-in away from a goal. JVR hasn’t exactly lit it up against the Islanders, Hurricanes, Washington Capitals and Devils, registering only one assist against each of the Hurricanes and Islanders.
Joffrey Lupul, RW Own%: 100
Lupul scored the Leafs lone goal against the New York Rangers on Saturday night. He has a three assist night against the Islanders and a 1-goal performance against the Hurricanes.
Tyler Bozak, C Own%: 94.8
Even though he only returned from injury recently and has only played three game, Bozak has quite the streak going. Dating back to before his injury, he has a seven-game point streak going on with two goals and eight assists for 10 points in that time span.
If he’s still available in your league, pick him up.
Jonathan Bernier, G Own%: 100
Bernier has a record of 3-1-1 in the last five games and has wins against Carolina, New York and New Jersey. He might not get the start against against the Islanders based on his last start against the Rangers, but his record could give him a shot at starting most of the games this week.
James Reimer, G Own%: 38.6
Reimer’s record might not be as good as Bernier’s, but he’s still a good pick-up, especially if you have Bernier on your team as well. Reimer has only two games against the opposition of the next week, losing to the Hurricanes and beating the Capitals in a shootout.
