The Toronto Maple Leafs return from a league-wide three-day break to renew hostilities with a division rival: the Buffalo Sabres. The teams haven’t played in almost a month, when Christian Ehrhoff scored the overtime winner in a 3-2 Sabres victory on November 29. The season series is at 2-1 for the Sabres.
The Sabres’ struggles have been well documented, but they actually hold a better record than the Leafs over their last 10 games. The Sabres are 4-4-2 while the Leafs are 3-5-2. Still, the Sabres have had a very difficult time scoring goals, ranking last in the league averaging a measly 1.68 per game. That’s 0.43 less per game than 29th-ranked Minnesota.
The Sabres will be without second-leading scorer and first-line centre Cody Hodgson tonight. They’ll also be missing depth centre Cody McCormick. On the Leafs’ side, there isn’t expected to be any changes from Monday’s lineup. For more on that and other pertinent game info, check out Daniel’s preview.
Jonathan Bernier will get the start again after a superb, 42-save effort in Monday’s 2-1 shootout loss to the Rangers. The Sabres will counter with veteran Ryan Miller. Miller has a .924 save percentage in 26 games this year.
