The struggles of the Toronto Maple Leafs have been the talk of the town since the start of November. This has, not surprisingly, led to trade rumors surrounding multiple Maple Leafs. Jake Gardiner, Cody Franson, James Reimer and James van Riemsdyk‘s names have all been thrown around, although JVR has been only brought up by opposing GMs.
We could sit around for days talking about who the Leafs could give up in a trade, but the biggest question which really needs to be asked is: If the Leafs make a trade, what should they be targeting in return?
Is it a centerman? The Leafs have had a lot of injury troubles up the middle this season with Tyler Bozak, Dave Bolland, Nazem Kadri and Trevor Smith all missing time. A trade for a center would help the Leafs depth at center if more injuries were to occur. However, when players like Bozak and Bolland return, the Leafs would have to make another move.
Is it a shut-down, stay-at-home defenseman? The Leafs blue liners have too often been the victims making an offensive pinch that costs the team at the other end. While the Leafs have more than a few offensive defensemen that have helped bolster the offense at times, the defensive side of the game has often been forgotten.
Do the Leafs just need more offensive depth? JVR, Joffrey Lupul, Phil Kessel and Nazem Kadri are expected to put up big numbers and are, for the most part, they are. However, the Leafs failings have sometimes been attributed to the Leafs secondary players have not picked up the slack when the big guns falter. Could a trade fix that?
What do you guys think?
