The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to right their sinking ship tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes at the Air Canada Centre. The Leafs lost for the 11th time in 15 games to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, and now sit in fifth place in the Atlantic, only three points ahead of the Ottawa Senators.
The Coyotes are in fifth in their own division (the Pacific), but are four points ahead of the Leafs. They lost a tough one to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday 3-1 despite mustering 15 shots in the first period alone. They couldn’t beat Carey Price on the power play either, going 0-for-4. They’ll be motivated to get back on track to keep pace in the tough Pacific.
James Reimer looks to be the starter again tonight after he manned the net against the Panthers. Reimer was pulled after letting in three goals on 15 shots against the St. Louis Blues last Thursday, and allowed three on 23 shots on Tuesday. The Leafs will need Reimer to find his form again, but also need to start giving him some goal support.
The Leafs announced yesterday that Morgan Rielly will not be released for the world junior tournament, and Jerred Smithson was called up from the Marlies after Trevor Smith broke his hand in Tuesday’s game. Smith could be out for up to two months. Tyler Bozak and Colton Orr both skated this morning, but are not expected to be back for a while.
