Toronto Maple Leafs In Line To Make Big Trade?

Well, Darren Dreger sure knows how to get fans talking.

Dreger made those two statements on TSN 1050 a couple days ago and of course it’s going to start all sorts of rumors.

We all assumed that there might have been a small trade in the works to bring in some secondary scoring or a shutdown defenseman. However, if Dreger’s statements are correct, and they usually are, the Toronto Maple Leafs could be in line to make a big trade.

If big name players are available, that means that they’re might only be a few untouchables on this team. I’d assume that among the names of untouchables are Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Nazem Kadri, Dave Bolland, Joffrey Lupul, Jay McClement, Morgan Rielly and Jonathan Bernier. At least in my opinion, those players aren’t going anywhere.

Everyone else is fair game. I could see everyone else on the Leafs roster being talked about in trades. Jake Gardiner could be expendable because of Reilly. Dion Phaneuf is a UFA at season’s end so if they feel they can’t sign him, he could be moved. Mason Raymond might play himself out of the Leafs price range. You could find a reason for a lot of players to be traded.

It’s this type of statement from Dreger that could motivate any Leaf that was listening to the radio show, or saw it on Twitter. If they feel they might be moved, they might start to play better to show that they shouldn’t be moved.

It looks like it could be a very exciting couple of months leading up to the trade deadline.
