Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Boston Bruins (Game Number 31): Live Thread

Welcome to the Sunday game thread. This is where you can come and hang out and talk about the Leafs and yell and scream a little bit. The Leafs are playing the Boston Bruins after all, and we know how that usually goes.

The Bruins arrived in Toronto today for the first time since last year’s playoffs, although the two teams played once before earlier in the year in Boston. The Bruins won that game 3-1 thanks to a 33-save performance by Tuukka Rask, which spoiled Leafs goaltender James Reimer’s solid 31-save effort. This time around, neither of those goalies will be playing.

Bruins backup Chad Johnson has only played five games this season, although he’s won four of them and carries a .918 save percentage. The Leafs will counter with Jonathan Bernier as they continue to go back-and-forth between starting him and Reimer. Bernier has been nothing short of sensational with a .931 SV% in 19 games.

The reason both backups are playing is because the starters got the nod in games last night. Both teams won, with the Bruins beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 thanks to two late goals, and the Leafs being unable to hold a two-goal lead against the Ottawa Senators but coming through in the shootout 4-3.

As Jeff noted in the preview, the Leafs will look to pounce on a wounded and depleted Bruins team. Shawn Thornton will be handed likely a double-digit game suspension for his attack on Brooks Orpik last night. Chris Kelly will also miss four-to-six weeks after sustaining an injury last night, and Loui Eriksson is out indefinitely with another concussion. The Bruins were already missing defensemen Adam McQuaid and Johnny Boychuk.

So if the Leafs are ever going to beat the Bruins, tonight might be their best chance. Let’s hope they can at least keep the opposition’s shot count below 50. Comment below to participate and stay updated with some of your favourite Maple Leafs tweeters here:
