Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday Off Night Open Thread

The Leafs might have the night off, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of interesting hockey games to talk about. The second game of the SUBWAY Super Series between the QMJHL and Russian Selects gets underway at 7, while a dwindling rivalry gets resuscitated later on as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals collide at 8.

The Leafs’ own Frederik Gauthier will be skating for Team QMJHL once again. Gauthier, of course, was the Leafs first-round draft choice (21st overall) this past summer. He’ll look to bring a physical and defensively sound game at centre for a talented Q squad looking to sweep the Russians in this short two-game series.

The hockey world will have at least one eye on tonight’s Capitals-Penguins game. Sidney Crosby of the Pens is tied for first in the league with 26 points, while Alex Ovechkin of the Caps is tied for first in goals with 17.

The rivalry takes on new meaning this year as the two teams are now in the same division. The Penguins hold a slim one-point lead over the Capitals for the division crown, but the Caps are surging. They’ve won three in a row and seven of their last 10.

For more on each team, check out Stars and Sticks and Pens Labyrinth. You can watch the game on TSN2 in Canada and NBC Sports Network in the U.S.

As for the Super Series game, you can catch that on Sportsnet in Canada and the NHL Network south of the border. Comment below to join the thread. Enjoy the games!

Guathier will be huge for the leafs in the future. Will be a very nice replacement to Mclement in two or three years once McClements new deal is signed (should be 2-3 years at 4-6 years depending on the length) at the end of this year.
