Toronto Maple Leafs News & Notes: November 20, 2013

I was at the Marlies game so I missed Leafs-Islanders last night, but from what I can gather from the highlights and box score, it looked like a pretty convincing win for the Buds. I’m not sure how much you can chalk that up to the fact they were facing the Isles’ backup goalie in Kevin Poulin, but the Leafs’ forwards sure looked on point with their rushes and scoring chances. Here’s the Game In Six if you missed it:

Once again, Jonathan Bernier played very well, continuing a rather remarkable string of fantastic play from both Leaf goalies. I would think James Reimer gets the start against the Nashville Predators on Thursday night just to keep the rotation going, but that’s obviously speculation at this point.

From looking at the advanced stats at Extra Skater, it looked like Jake Gardiner had another strong game. He played the most minutes out of any Leaf defenseman, and still came out at 50 per cent in five-on-five corsi. He also managed to fire three shots on net, tied for second on the team in that regard. Did any other Leafs stand out to you last night?

Here are some links for the Leafs’ Wednesday off day:

You have to feel for the guy. He’s had some pretty awful luck when it comes to injuries. From Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post.

Shot quality reveals Rask’s true value

To what extent is Tuukka Rask’s gaudy numbers a product of the Boston Bruins’ defense? (Watching Rask last night, it sure looked like he won that game in spite of the defense in front of him.) From Chris Boyle of Sportsnet.

Tuukka Rask: Early Vezina Buzz Is Deserved

Andrew Thompson of Causeway Crowd seems to agree with me on that last point.
