2014 Sochi Olympics: Community Prediction

The results are in, the people have spoken and readers of Editor In Leaf think Canada will repeat as Gold Medal champions in Sochi in 2014.

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been looking at each of the Big 7 countries in international hockey and projecting what their 25-man roster might look like when they’re decided in late December. Since we’re big fans of democracy here at EIL, we included a poll at the end of each article asking you, faithful reader, to offer your prediction on how each team will finish. Here’s how you responded:

  1. Canada
  2. Sweden
  3. Finland
  4. Russia
  5. USA
  6. Slovakia
  7. Czech Republic

The scoring system was simple: Each team earned three points for a Gold Medal vote, two points for a Silver and one point for a Bronze. We didn’t bother adding up any of the 4-6 or 7+ votes, because unlike the NHL, we don’t reward losers. (Reader: “Technically, you’re rewarding losing by awarding points for Silver and Bronze Medal votes-“ Writer: “Shhhhhhhhhhhh!”)

Under this system, your team is rewarded for garnering a lot of votes. So Finland, whose poll garnered 31 votes (four more than second-place Slovakia), is rewarded because their fans are vocal and have good taste in hockey blogs. USA, on the other hand, was hurt because their poll only received 13 votes. I guess The Sleeping Giant never got the memo.

Slovakia and Czech Republic were at a bit of a disadvantage because I tweaked the poll answers after I had already written their posts. Instead of keeping a “1-3” answer, I made separate answers for Gold, Silver and Bronze. To try to keep their results fair, I awarded two points for every “1-3” vote. Before you start yelling at me through your computer screen, just know that even in a hypothetical scenario where every “1-3” vote for Slovakia was a Gold Medal vote, they still would have finished four points back of the fifth-place Americans.
